After struggling to make a living on the Dakota prairie, Laura and Almanzo Wilder and their daughter, Rose, moved to Missouri in 1894. The family traveled by covered wagon south to cross the Missouri River and then south and east through Nebraska and Kansas into the Ozarks of Missouri. Near the town of Mansfield they purchased forty acres of rough farmland. The farm consisted of "not one but several ridges rolling in every direction and covered with rocks and brush and timber." Laura named the farm Rocky Ridge.

When Laura was in her sixties, Rose, a well-known author and journalist, helped Laura write her first book, Little House in the Big Woods , based on Laura's memories of living in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. The first Little House book was published in 1932. Over the next eleven years, Laura and Rose worked together to write seven more books in the Little House series: Farmer Boy , Little House on the Prairie , On the Banks of Plum Creek , By the Shores of Silver Lake , The Long Winter , Little Town on the Prairie and These Happy Golden Years .
